The inland attractions offer what I refer to as the great tropical outdoors. The vast savannahs have incomparable display of wildlife with some such as; the Hells gate, Crescent Island and the Maasai Mara giving you an opportunity to enjoy guided walks amidst wildlife. The scenic beauty and awe-inspiring experience of climbing east African mountains is not only rewarding but also gives the most ideal natural therapy of shrugging-off that excess fat. This is Mount Kenya – The name sake of a nation.

Finally, if you enjoy city life, then Nairobi city will be the place for you. With one of the greatest diversity of natural attractions in the region, you will need to alter your perception of modern urbanization as Nairobi is one unique case study of a natural-modern city hosting besides the only wildlife capital, a variety of natural attraction including dense tropical rainforests, rivers and falls within a short driving distance from the city centre.

Kenya Safari: Spectacular Wilderness Thrills of Marsabit

Surrounded by harsh environment, you may be exonerated to assume this remote national reserve is misplaced and its unique attractions far fetched by unknown phenomena. But you are mistaken; the real thrill is true, authentic and natural. On this northern frontier of Kenya arid spheres lay one of the most spectacular wilderness thrills and nature's most unique contrast. This is Lake Paradise in the greater Marsabit National Reserve and the ancient Marsabit town.

Marsabit town and its sanctuaries lie atop a mountain rising sheer from the desert floor to a height of about 1707 meters. The mountain is a natural phenomenon, born out of volcanic fire and shaped by mist where its great massive ranges and undulating peaks have created its own ambient climate.

Every evening, about midnight, the hot air rising from the desert floor cools and forms clinging fingers of mist, which grasp the mountain slopes, rarely releasing their grip until the late part of the morning. Mount Marsabit is famous for the dreamy waters of Lake Paradise which are located on its peak, for the foothills of rugged grandeur that fan out from its volcanic craters, and for the cloud forests which shelter both greater kudu and an ancient dynasty of elephants famous for their huge tusks.

Although the lower slopes of the mountain are scorched and dry, above them are richly forested wonderlands of crater lakes, swamps, towering cliffs and giant trees, all with an astounding display of wildlife and magnificent scenic views. Here bird and beast dart between the tall stands of juniper and podocarpus in a scene much as wildlife filmmakers Osa and Martin Johnson recorded when they made their home at Lake Paradise, one of the crater lakes, in the 1920's.

Many species of raptors inhabit the shaggy cliffs and the treetops around Lake Paradise and Sokorte Guda, a cliff lined bowl, which forms a natural amphitheatre in which Marsabit's elephants parade to drink in the late afternoon. Large herds of buffalo and other ungulates join this display. Other species found on the mountain include the shy greater kudu and other antelope as well as lions and leopards.

On the road south from Mount Marsabit to the rocky plains, the area is home to Sociable Weaver birds, which can be identified by their neater, tidier nests; Sparrow Weavers, with their "scruffier" nests; and white-bellied turacos. The area also unfolds indescribable natural phenomenon while passing through extraordinary Strangler figs in the mountain-top forest. This displays a stark contrast to the dusty track below which is lined by low, flat-topped acacias. Bird watching is a popular activity in this area.

For an estimated 63 years, Marsabit National Park and Reserve was the home of Ahmed, patriarch of the forest, guarded from hunters seeking his mighty tusks, by a presidential decree. A model of Ahmed now stands in the National Museum in Nairobi while his scions wander the forest under the watchful eyes of the Marsabit Reserve's rangers.

Lower down the mountain, below the forest line, groups of Borana people drive their camels to water at the singing wells. Three or four men form a human ladder down these deep shafts and with camel-hide buckets work in swift relay to bring water to the troughs above. The songs they sing while undertaking this work have earned the wells their name.

From Nairobi, the reserve is reached via Nanyuki and lsiolo a distance of 620 km. The road is paved up to lsiolo leaving a distance of 270 km of very bad road that is only motorable by 4 wheel-drive vehicles during the dry season. The reserve is 2 1/2 hrs by air from Nairobi and is adequately served by a tarmac airstrip located about one kilometer from Marsabit town centre.

Marsabit Town is a staging post for the journey to Moyale and onwards to Ethiopia and also the beginning of an adventure, which intrepid travelers make when they cross the inhospitable Chalbi Desert to reach Lake Turkana.

This shimmering and seemingly endless expanse of sand stretches for 300 kilometers to the shore of the lake of which it were once part. Even today, perhaps once in every decade, in one of the torrential downpours, which occur during a rare rainy season, it will again come into flood to form a vast but shallow lake.

There is no doubt that lake paradise and the surrounding enclosures of Marsabit national reserve will soon be asserted world wonders that every soul will desire to experience.

Online Hotel Bookings, Kenya Travel, Africa Travel, Africa Hotels and Lodge, Wildlife Lodges, Camping Hotels and Lodges

One of the limitations of traveling to Africa is the slow pace with which its travel industry has in embracing the use of technology. Many would be travelers today are more comfortable on making a payment by use of a credit card for the following reasons

1. At the top of the list is the fact that i can pay for it now look for the money and 30 days later refund the credit card company.
2. It is less cumbersome as traditional methods of payment require one to go the bank and transfer the money while a credit card payment can be done from my home or desk-top
3.It is thus much easier and faster to finalize the transaction.
4. I can then say it cost less in terms of time and money as opposed to traditional ways since you do not have to queue at the bank, burn fuel to get there and then make phone call follow-ups.
5. Credit card payment is today a much safer way of transacting since a third party 'the merchant’s involved. It is for this reason that a number of African organizations are quickly taking up this idea of enabling credit card processing on their website and acquire a competitive edge against those who have not yet done the same.
A few websites in Kenya, Egypt and South Africa such as www.intokenya.com are already offering holiday makers an easier way of booking their accommodation and saving time spent calling hotels and agents to get bookings.

Three Ways to Save Money While on a Kenyan Safari

There are numerous ways in which you can save on your trip to Kenya.

Flights:

To get cheap flights to Kenya, you need to travel in the low season. You could save over $200 as compared to traveling in the high season. Kenya's high tourist season is between January and February and June to September. Additionally, taking direct flights could also save you on airfare.

Accommodation:

It's quite easy to save on accommodations in Kenya. Rather than book your stay in a hotel, you could stay in a hostel or choose a home stay. Home stays have come to be the best option in Kenya budget travel. Here, you get to stay with real Kenyan families and you will experience Kenya from a Kenyan's perspective. Home Stays usually cost about $14 per night inclusive of all meals and usually laundry. For the adventurous ones, camping is a good option too. If you have your camping equipment, it will only cost you $5 a night. Some campsites will rent a mattress and bedding at about $3 per night.

Kenyan Food:

Food in Kenya is generally cheap! You can choose to eat at local fast foods or restaurants. These will be much cheaper than eating out at exotic restaurants or hotels. When going out on a safari, it may be well worth it to visit the supermarket at the start of your journey and buy some things. This may include fresh fruits, juice, bottled water, sandwich items, crisps and the like.

If you get these three areas right, you are likely to save over $500 on your trip to Kenya.

Thereafter, they trek in a big circle through the south of Kenya and back again. The Wildebeest Migration is, in fact one of the biggest wildlife shows on earth. Some lodges are strategically placed so you can comfortably enjoy this amazing natural view.

Take a tour along the Swahili coast region

The Swahili region is a marvelous mix of myriad cultures- African, Arab and Indian cultures primarily. This coastal region, located within Kenya has a charm of its own. It has been like that since the 9th century. Arabs have frequented this part along the Indian Ocean, which has led to the rise of the famous Swahili culture. A majority of the population is Muslim, although of a liberal type.

Some of the unique attractions that you can enjoy in your Kenya travel are -- watch a Taarab performance, treat yourself to the seductive African-Arab-Indian music played at weddings and other festivals, not to miss out on the 500 kilometers of white sand beaches with excellent and affordable beach resorts. Tips to Help you Cut Cost While on an African Safari

The holiday season is beckoning and now there are lots of vacation packages up for grabs from beach holidays, wildlife adventures, eco-tours just name a few of them. Although those offering the packages sometimes help one to identify a package that best fits their budget it is important that you the traveler also take some action in order to cut on your costs.
1. The first thing you require is information. Most important yet little appreciated facts is that is actually costs less to book holidays and travel through a registered tried and tested operator since they get highly discounted rates from hotels than what a traveler would pay when booking direct. This is because the supply the hotels with huge numbers of guests.
2. Secondly it is to ensure that your tour operator can handle your logistics and structure a trip that will give you’re the experience you want. It is less cumbersome to use a tour operator.
3. Plan early this cannot be overemphasized. Hotels and many travel resources usually give discounts when you book early or during the low season. You will also be able to pay for your package in installments. I usually take a yearly holiday and I can thus save for it on a regular basis.
4. Take advantage of low season rates are drastically reduced the places are less crowded and one can enjoy most of the facilities and good service during such times. During peak season resources are usually constrained and waiters overstretched that the service that are otherwise superior become standard.
5. Finally small is fine. A holiday need not be a grand trip to a five star hotel or lodge but even a camping adventure for 5 days or less is still a holiday. It gives one the much-needed break for you and your family.

Learn About Kenya's Four Animal Sanctuaries

Animal lovers who want to spend their holiday with animals can depend on Kenya’s four main animal sanctuaries. The Garissa Community Giraffe sanctuary is located in Garissa Town in North Eastern Province of Kenya bordering the dry dusty Bour-Algi village. The sanctuary was started after a surprising influx of giraffes from the border areas. The giraffes move freely within human settlement, or stoop to drink from close to where the local women are drawing water. The animal sanctuary is a community-based conservation and natural resource management initiative. Its name stems from the large presence of giraffes attracted by the abundant acacia trees. The sanctuary has an estimated 1000 giraffes. Other animals sighted in the area are Kirk’s dik-dik, Lesser Kudu, warthog and waterbuck.

Lumo Wildlife Sanctuary is a migration corridor for elephants and other game between Tsavo East and West Community. This animal sanctuary has a very beautiful landscape characterized of woody rolling savannah. The animal sanctuary covers an area of 46,000 hectares in Tsavo in Taita Taveta district in southern Kenya. It is a significant dispersal area for elephants that use the migration corridor. The area has a rich variety of flora and fauna. Other than the elephant, there is the buffalo, giraffe, aardvark and lion, eland, oryx, dikdik and kongoni. It is also home to numerous birds. You can make a stop over to the Tsavo West National Park which borders this animal sanctuary.

Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary is located in East Africa, in the Kwale District of Kenya's Coastal Province. The animal sanctuary has an area of 36 km², borders the Shimba Hills National Reserve. The sanctuary is characterized by rolling hills, steep ridges, cliffs and winding water shades. Elephants are the main attraction at the animal sanctuary with about 150 of them at the sanctuary. The Kenyan Giraffe

Also known scientifically as Giraffa camelopardalis, the Kenyan giraffe is the tallest living animal with a long neck adapted to reach vegetation far above that is inaccessible to other herbivores except the elephant. There are eight sub-species of Giraffes in Africa. Kenya has the rarest Rothschild Giraffe, the commonly seen Maasai Giraffe of Southern Kenya and the Reticulated Giraffe of Northern Kenya. The giraffes have a unique walking gait moving both right legs forward then both left with a top speed of about 55km an hour. Unlike other wild animals, giraffes have good eyesight. Giraffe horns are actually knobs covered with skin and hair above the eyes which protect the head from injury.

Giraffes inhabit mostly in the arid and dry-savanna zones south of the Sahara and therefore can be found wherever trees occur in Kenya. They are very common in many of the Kenya National Game Reserves. They feed mainly on broad leafed deciduous foliage and on other evergreen species. It's menu includes Acacia and Combretum trees that are always available in most areas such as the Amboseli national park. This animal can feed on 134 kg of leaves per day and drinks water every 2 to 3 days.Since it feeds on green leaves it can leave with no water where its not available.

The Kenyan Giraffe can be commonly sighted even outside wildlife conversational areas. They are social, non-territorial with no coordinated herd movements or leadership. Males test their strength by swinging necks on each other to establish who is dominant. They reproduce throughout the year but usually peek during rainy seasons. A female can conceive at age four while the male starts mating at age seven. The cow takes 16 months between two pregnancies.

The young animals are left together while their mothers graze within. They can survive weaning at two months since they they already can start eating leaves. Young giraffes are most likely to be preyed on by other predators since they cant attack in return though they are never left alone. Bulls often use their horns to combat its competitors whe mating and powerful kicks for its enemies. The fiercest known enemy to adult Kenyan giraffe's is man who usually kill it for wild meat and skin.

Discover Kenya's Best Kept Secrets

How would like adventure travel to Kenya, to learn some of Kenya's best kept secrets? How about checking into Hemingway's Resort, a luxury hotel on the Indian Ocean, or spending some time in the same area that Elsa was released into the wild by Joy Adamson? You can enjoy these, and more, with luxury adventure travel to Kenya, land of the Luo, Kalenjin, Turkana and the famous Maasai warrior race, as the name is correctly spelled although we shall use the more popular western spelling of Masai.

The capital is Nairobi, and that would be a good place to start. There are many types of hotels in Nairobi, but if you can, try to book into one of the few boutique hotels that accommodate only a few guests, twelve being a good number. For that you will have to book yourself a luxury adventure vacation, with personal service offering vacation planning from just yourself and your partner.

However, it is the game reserves that most people visit Kenya to see, and that adventure travelers to Kenya are particularly interested in. Why not spend some time in the park and check out the elephants, leopards and cheetahs, and of course the lions. Although most people prefer to go on guided safaris, others prefer fishing and nature walks, or even just to lie by the pool. It's your vacation so indulge yourself.

You must then visit the Masai Mara Nature Reserve, where the big game animals are less under threat from human activity. Try to head for the Cottar 1920 Mari Safari Camp, where the 22,000 acre private concession houses only 12 guests, but it's well worth it, and no luxury adventure travel to Kenya should miss a visit to Cottars. Calvin Cottar is one of the best guides in the country, and will take you on a game drive in a 4WD or even a more traditional ox cart. It is an advantage that the camp is not part of the reserve, because you can go on night drives and guided walking tours, which would not otherwise be permitted.

Fascinating Interpretations of Different Gestures by Different Cultures

When visiting different countries around the world you have to take caution of the kind of gestures you use. Some have different meanings in different countries so you must be careful not to get into trouble.

While Western culture has become used to the thumbs-up as a positive, informal signal, generally indicating a job well done, there are cultures where a thumbs-up may land you in trouble. In most of Latin America and West Africa, as well as Greece, Russia, Sardinia and the south of Italy, the thumbs-up basically means the same as the middle finger. Also, it’s generally not recommended to use the thumbs-up around the Middle East as an insult out there.

Opening your palm to your target and stretching out your fingers seems harmless enough to most Westerners. Most people would think you’re waving. In Greece, however, the gesture is known as a moutza, and is one of their most traditional manual insults. The gesture is also an insulting one in Pakistan and many parts of Africa. The Japanese use a very similar sign to insult their old enemies, the Koreans roughly translating as ‘animal’.

Curling your index finger towards you in a summoning motion is a gesture used to beckon people to follow you. Beware, however, of using this gesture in the Philippines – it’s a method of
communication considered worthy only to use on dogs, and is actually punishable by arrest. Worst of all, they’ll break your index finger in order to prevent you from committing the same crime again!

While many people assume that maintaining eye contact is a sign of courage and honesty in Zimbabwe it is rude to maintain eye contact. In Lebanon raising a closed fist into the air is making a rude gesture while to nod your head means yes. To signal no, point your head sharply upward and raise your eyebrows.

Interesting Myths and ways of the Maasai People in Kenya

The Maasai tribe is the most authentic ethnic tribe of Kenya. The Maasai tribe is a unique and popular tribe due to their long preserved culture. The Maasai's distinctive culture, dress and strategic territory along the game parks of Kenya and Tanzania have made them one of East Africa's most internationally famous tourist attractions.

The Amboseli National Park, Nairobi National Park, Masai Mara Game Reserve, Samburu, Lake Nakuru, and Tsavo National Parks in Kenya are some of the major tourist sites where you can see the Maasai people and their culture.

Some of their distinct practices is their way of dressing. Today, typical Maasai dress consists of red sheets, (shuka), wrapped around the body and loads of beaded jewelry placed around the neck and arms. These are worn by both men and women and may vary in color depending on the occasion.

Ear piercing and the stretching of earlobes are also part of Maasai beauty, and both men and women wear metal hoops on their stretched earlobes.

They eat meat, drink milk and, on occasion, drink blood from their most treasured possession-their cattle. Bulls, oxen and lambs are slaughtered for meat on special occasions and for ceremonies. The by-products of the animals - skin and hides - are used as bedding while cow dung is used for building (it is smeared on the walls). The Maasai's entire way of life truly revolves around their cattle.

The Maasai believe that if you were travelling in distant lands and you were caught up by nightfall you could sleep at your agemate’s house whether he was there or not, after planting a spear outside to announce your presence.

Another myth is that young Maasai children play a game of placing rocks on a sleeping rhinoceros; the last one to put a rock on it before it wakes up being the winner.

There is a forest near Mau known as Medung’i, which means in Maa ‘Never cut.’ It was believed that if you cut a tree in the area, blood, and not sap, would ooze from it.You would also hear wails of mourning as if in real death. It is this cultural belief which has kept the natural environment largely intact in Maasailand.

There are also practices that are unique to the Maasai. Take house building, for example. Whereas in many other parts of Kenya, it is the man who builds the house for his family, among the Maasai, this is the woman’s responsibility.

Kenya's safari tours enable both visiting tourists and native Kenyans to enjoy the country's wildlife, while also exploring the Maasai's rich cultural heritage by visiting their homes and attending Maasai cultural shows. These tours are held in Kenya's various game reserves, in particular, the Masai Mara National reserve.

Tours also provide an ideal opportunity for participants to take part in the Maasai dance and buy traditional Maasai jewelry, art and crafts to take home as souvenirs.

Leave your Work in The Office- Enjoy a Holiday

By TANIA NGIMA

Research shows that if you give in to the temptation to work from home, even if it is to check an email, you end up burning out and losing everything.

Imagine a scenario where the minute you get home your boss and co-workers call you incessantly with queries, requests and work. While this may seem like your work-life boundaries are being thwarted, it is exactly the same thing when you decide to do ‘just a bit of work’ from home.

We live in an era where the Blackberry and email-enabled phones and laptops create mobile offices for us while we’re on the go. Unfortunately, research shows that if you give in to the temptation to work from home, even if it is to check email, you end up working longer hours. This leads to lower long-term productivity.

Experiments by Henry Ford, an automobile manufacturer showed that working shorter hours increases the total work output and he popularised the 40-hour work week.

Proper relaxation leads to peak productivity when you get back to work; the hard part is how to ensure that you effectively relax and ‘leave work at work’.

Manage expectations

Avoid the impulse to quickly check your email or respond to a query if it is not urgent. For people who travel a lot in their line of work, there’s usually the need to fulfill your quota of tasks, all the while keeping on tabs back home.

Use the ‘out of office’ auto reply. There is a reason it was created. Unless yours is a one-man office and you’re the one man, leave instructions for who can be consulted in your absence and give a number to be reached on only in case of emergencies. Or don’t leave a number at all; office emergencies tend to be created, not real.

If you’re away on a holiday in Mombasa, leave as many gadgets as you can back home; the laptops, Blackberry and email devices. The anxiety that comes with not knowing what is going on back in the office will dissipate after a day or two.

Create boundaries

Being able to effectively create boundaries means you have capable colleagues who can handle matters arising in your absence or make judgment calls. If you don’t have this support framework then you will need to work hard to create it to prevent every query being something only you can handle.

If you work from home, set aside a defined room or a space to make boundary setting easier. Once you are through working for the day or the morning, physically stepping out of the space or room will help you switch off from work mode. And even though you may feel the need to put in 14-hour days into a business or venture that relies only on you to succeed, the danger is that you may end up burning out and losing everything altogether.

Plan ahead

To prevent the feeling that you have so much that has not been done from following you around, learn to keep a to-do-list.

Spend a few minutes at the beginning of each day looking at it and adding any new items on and a few minutes at the end of each day reviewing your progress and creating one for the next day.

Usually, the constant thoughts running through our heads about one thousand things to be done is just noise, the physical act of putting these tasks down on paper acts as a mental shift and relaxes your subconscious.

Beach getaway

By Wambui Thimba

When you go for a beach holiday, the last thing you want is to tug around bags of clothes. Travel light when you go anywhere warm by choosing pieces that work for day and night.

For an effortless beach look, wear light comfortable clothing like a sundress, flip flops, shorts, skirts and wrap-arounds such as kikoys and lesos.

Wear key accessories for a look that is chic yet functional. Don’t forget to carry a beach bag and a pair of sunglasses.

Take very little make-up. A moisturiser and waterproof mascara will be enough. Add sunscreen, some face powder and lip balm and you are ready for a fun and stylish holiday.

The weather in Kenyan beaches is mostly hot and sunny, you therefore do not want to wear any heavy clothing that will leave you feeling very uncomfortable.

Africa Point Reduces 2011 Safari Prices to Kenya andTanzania

Kenya and Tanzania are by far the best travel destinations in Africa with thousands of locations including game reserves, mountains, beaches, Islands and so on. Tours and Travel companies are focusing a lot more on these two countries and travelers can take advantage of the offers being offered in an attempt to beat competition. One such offer to grab this Easter season is by Africa Point Ltd, one of the leading travel agents in Africa. The company has announced a significant reduction in safari prices to the two countries for the year 2011.

The offer entails a 13-day luxury safari traversing through Kenya's and Tanzania's best game parks and reserves starting from US$ 3,280 down from US$ 4,470 per person based on a minimum of two people. This saves each visitor US$ 1,190 (based on the current exchange rate of the Kenyan Shilling).

Dubbed the Big Cat Safari Kenya and Tanzania, the 13-day safari takes you to Amboseli, Ngorongoro, Serngeti, Lake Manyara, Aberdares, Lake Nakuru and Maasai Mara giving you rewarding opportunities to encounter the most diverse and abundant wildlife in the whole of Africa.

Included in the price are complimentary transfer to and from the airport, such a Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Kenya and Julius Nyerere International Airport in Tanzania, accommodations on bed and breakfast basis, park entrance fees where applicable, service of an English speaking driver guide, transport based on a 4WD safari vehicle with pop up roof for game viewing in both Tanzania and Kenya. Also included are meals and accommodation while on safari, one way shuttle bus ticket from Arusha to Nairobi, dinner on the last day of the tour, game drives as per itinerary, driver allowances and all government taxes.

The reduced prices are a great incentive not only for international tourists, but also for local residents who will now be able to enjoy weekend breaks in any of the Kenya and Tanzania safari destinations and plan more vacations all year round. It is also a way of attracting new local tourists who have a negative attitude on vacation by terming it as an expensive and unaffordable venture.

So go on book a safari today!
