1. Carry comfortable shoes preferably sneakers since many sites offer bush walks as part of their holiday packages.
2. Travel With a friend(s) as company for the long journey
3. Know whether the packages offer a good supply of water because one is bound to get very thirsty and de-hydrated for that matter.
4. Most places have tour guides who are conversant with at least one foreign language but for your own sake carry a Kiswahili manual just in case.
5. A pair of binoculars would come in handy during the parks drives in open 4 X 4 vehicles.
6. Inform the personnel at the lodge about any life threatening illnesses that require special diets or schedules of meals to avoid aggravating the condition.
7. Always remember to carry personal effects everywhere you go. This includes cash, passports, air tickets and visa cards.
8. Carry enough local currency since it is hard to locate a Bureau De change to exchange international currency.
9. Carry light clothes for the day and a jacket or two for the cold nights.
10. Make sure that the tour company is a reputable one and this can be done by finding out whether they are enlisted by the tourist board of Kenya that has seen that certain standards in the hospitality industry are maintained.
11. Last but not least be prepared psychologically for an adventure of a lifetime.
