The choices of holiday destinations have also become more profound and informed thanks to the internet inventions that have made communication and sharing of information easy, fast and reliable. The inland attractions offer what I refer to as the great tropical outdoors. The vast savannahs have incomparable display of wildlife with some such as; the Hells gate, Crescent Island and the Maasai Mara giving you an opportunity to enjoy guided walks amidst wildlife. The scenic beauty and awe-inspiring experience of climbing east African mountains is not only rewarding but also gives the most ideal natural therapy of shrugging-off that excess fat. The Museum was initiated in 1910 by the then East Africa and Uganda Natural History Society

Interesting Myths and ways of the Maasai People in Kenya

The Maasai tribe is the most authentic ethnic tribe of Kenya. The Maasai tribe is a unique and popular tribe due to their long preserved culture. The Maasai's distinctive culture, dress and strategic territory along the game parks of Kenya and Tanzania have made them one of East Africa's most internationally famous tourist attractions.

The Amboseli National Park, Nairobi National Park, Masai Mara Game Reserve, Samburu, Lake Nakuru, and Tsavo National Parks in Kenya are some of the major tourist sites where you can see the Maasai people and their culture.

Some of their distinct practices is their way of dressing. Today, typical Maasai dress consists of red sheets, (shuka), wrapped around the body and loads of beaded jewelry placed around the neck and arms. These are worn by both men and women and may vary in color depending on the occasion.

Ear piercing and the stretching of earlobes are also part of Maasai beauty, and both men and women wear metal hoops on their stretched earlobes.

They eat meat, drink milk and, on occasion, drink blood from their most treasured possession-their cattle. Bulls, oxen and lambs are slaughtered for meat on special occasions and for ceremonies. The by-products of the animals - skin and hides - are used as bedding while cow dung is used for building (it is smeared on the walls). The Maasai's entire way of life truly revolves around their cattle.

The Maasai believe that if you were travelling in distant lands and you were caught up by nightfall you could sleep at your agemate’s house whether he was there or not, after planting a spear outside to announce your presence.

Another myth is that young Maasai children play a game of placing rocks on a sleeping rhinoceros; the last one to put a rock on it before it wakes up being the winner.

There is a forest near Mau known as Medung’i, which means in Maa ‘Never cut.’ It was believed that if you cut a tree in the area, blood, and not sap, would ooze from it.You would also hear wails of mourning as if in real death. It is this cultural belief which has kept the natural environment largely intact in Maasailand.

There are also practices that are unique to the Maasai. Take house building, for example. Whereas in many other parts of Kenya, it is the man who builds the house for his family, among the Maasai, this is the woman’s responsibility.

Kenya's safari tours enable both visiting tourists and native Kenyans to enjoy the country's wildlife, while also exploring the Maasai's rich cultural heritage by visiting their homes and attending Maasai cultural shows. These tours are held in Kenya's various game reserves, in particular, the Masai Mara National reserve.

Tours also provide an ideal opportunity for participants to take part in the Maasai dance and buy traditional Maasai jewelry, art and crafts to take home as souvenirs.

Observe the Rules when in a Park for your Own Good

Parks are dangerous zones and when you are there it is imperative and important to observe all the rules and regulations set by the park that you are visiting. Most of the rules are the same in all the Kenyan national parks and game reserves.

You are not allowed to go off-road in parks unless you have confirmed sighting of a cheetah, lion, leopard or rhino. Only in this instance can you leave the road or track at the nearest point to the sighting, and then approach no more than 25 metres to the animals. Always return to the track by the way that you came. All the parks have certain well marked routes that you are allowed to follow.

No shouting, clapping or cheering nor sitting or standing on vehicles. Only a maximum of five vehicles is allowed to surround an animal at the same time. Vehicles waiting to see the sighting must wait at a distance of 100 metres. Animals are not to be chased, followed too closely or harassed by forcing them into movement or approaching the animal at closer than 25 metres.Respect the privacy of the wildlife, this is their habitat.

During the wildebeest migration visitors are not allowed out of their vehicle or to stand on vehicles at crossing points. Never block a crossing by parking too close, nor drive through the animal herds. No more than 20 vehicles are allowed at the crossing point.

Don't feed the animals, it upsets their diet and leads to human dependence and keep quiet as noise disturbs the wildlife and may antagonize your fellow visitors. Ensure you stay in your vehicle at all times, except at designated picnic or walking areas as animals can be wild and unpredictable.Leave no litter and never leave fires unattended or discard burning objects.

Respect the cultural heritage of Kenya, never take pictures of the local people or their habitat without asking their permission, respect the cultural traditions of Kenya and always dress with decorum. Stay over or leave before dusk, visitors must vacate the Park between 6.00 p.m. - 6.00 a.m, night game driving is not allowed.

If you break any of the above rules, Rangers have the legal right to impose an on-the-spot fine of KSh 10,000, have your vehicle and/or people removed from the park immediately, have the vehicle and/or people banned from the park.

The Maasai Mara National Park

The Maasai Mara National Park is about 1,600 square kilometers in size. Rumor has it that it is the richest of Kenya’s game parks in terms of the flora and fauna found in the park. There is the grass land, dense bush, thickets forests and not to forget the ever permanent Mara river. As is common with many game reserves in the country, animals have no respect for boundaries with many cris – crossing the Mara and Serengeti at pleasure. Many tourists both local and foreign confess that they that it is while in the Mara that they feel that they are really in the country.
It is a fine country for the big five and the lions as well. Amongst the animals in the park that live with the big five is the ‘Topi’ whose population is around 6,000 animals, a wide variety of birds who form a symbiotic relationship with the big animals. The birds eat the parasitic insects on the backs of buffaloes and elephants that in turn provide shelter to them against wild creatures who consider the birds a delicacy. Also found are gazelles, zebras, giraffes and snakes that complete on gigantic food chain in the Mara – Serengeti ecosystem. The Mara River that runs across the park is a permanent river that is relied upon heavily by the animals in the dry season when the other streams have dried up. Today the park is a great tourist destination especially since the year 2008 when a prominent person in the world suggested that the wildebeest migration should be considered the eighth wonder of the modern world.
The Mara has more than 200 lodges and restaurants with more springing up conveniently during the migration and hundreds of tour operators in the region. The sight is comparable to Biashara street in Nairobi where after every baby shop there is a baby shop but this time round, it is after every lodge in the Mara there is another lodge.
Other than wildlife there are other sights such as the numerous trees species for the biologists and agriculturists. It is a sight to be hold and one should definitely make it a point to visit the park at least once in their life time.
